The holiday season is fast approaching and with it fireworks, trips, and enviromental changes… we should be prepared to to help our pets stay calm and happy during this stressfull time.

At the moment many of our clients ask us for help so that their pets do not have such a hard time in situations such as:

You can also come and have fun with your whole family at our PET PHOTO WITH SANTA event on the 17th and then go to meet the real Storm Troopers afterwards.

 Who gets the food?

The food will be devided up between Gatos y Amigos, ADANA, Mirada Libra, and their respective foster homes.

Last years record was ONE TONE of PET FOOD!!! But we are sure that with your help we will top that number and feed many more abandoned/homeless animals this year! WE CAN DO IT!

Clinica Veterinaria Estepona also pledged to donate food form our clinic! All the food collected between now and the 17th will be hand-delivered by our veterinarians to Calle Villa.

We made this Angel Fund to be able to give life-saving surgeries to abandoned animals is need.

Many orthopedic and traumatologic surgeries are very expensive and our surgeons want to help by donating our time, knowledge and facilities to these surgeries, but the surgical supplies needed are very costly.

As we humans age our bodies do not function as well as they used to anymore, the same thing happens in our pets. Older dogs and cats are more likely to encounter health problems than younger pets. Thanks to advances in veterinary medicine, pets are living longer than ever before.

Did you know that … a 7 year old dog or cat is equivalent to a 50 year old person. Most people are having preventive medicine at this age- routine physical exams, breast exams, prostate exams, blood pressure checkups, blood panels and dietary changes.

Not sure how old your pet would be in “human years”? Here are Dog and Cat Aging charts. If your pet is over 50 “human years” old – your pet is geriatric!

Preventive senior exams can help detect health problems in the early stages, when diseases can be treated more effectively.

Common Health Conditions of Senior Pets

Dental Disease – Inflammation of the teeth and gums may lead to pain, infection, tooth loss, bad breath, kidney and heart disease, and, as a result, decrease your pet’s life expectancy.

Endocrine Disease: Addison’s, Cushing’s, Diabetes, Hyperthyroid, Hypothyroid – Aging pets often experience changes in thyroid, pancreas, and adrenal gland function that can negatively affect the heart, digestive system, as well as liver and kidney.

Heart Disease – Pets with heart disease can experience difficulty breathing, fatigue, exercise intolerance, and lethargy.

Kidney – Failure of this organ can lead to chemical imbalances, anemia, compromised immune function, and blood clotting defects as well as altered mental capacity. Kidney disease is a leading cause of death in geriatric cats.

Liver – Failure can lead to chemical imbalances, anemia, compromised immune function, and blood clotting defects as well as altered mental capacity.

Arthritis – Arthritic joints are not only painful, they make it difficult for your pet to climb stairs, run, or even jump into your lap

Obesity – As your pet’s metabolism slows down, weight gain can increase his or her risk of arthritis, disc disease, and diabetes.

Cancer –  Early detection may improve the prognosis. Many treatments are available and most have few side effects.

The Senior Exam

With frequent checkups we can screen for common senior diseases. By diagnosing and treating problems earlier, we may be able to slow the disease process and prevent pain and discomfort. In addition to a complete physical examination, diagnostic tests can help detect many diseases before your pet displays signs of a condition.

Physical Examination – We can check for physical signs of cancer, arthritis, heart and lung disease, dental disease, or cataracts.

Complete Blood Count (CBC) – This test helps identify infections, anemia, and certain types of cancer as well as problems with bleeding and the immune system.
 
Serum Chemistry Profile – This blood test can help identify diseases of the liver and kidney, and endocrine disorders such as Diabetes or Cushing’s
Furthermore, we recommend additional tests such as blood pressure measurement, radiographs, and electrocardiography (ECG or EKG).​​​​​​​
